UNI Alumni Association honors 2007 Heritage Honours recipientsThe University of Northern Iowa Alumni Association’s Heritage Honours Awards have been a tradition since 1956, recognizing UNI graduates for personal and professional accomplishments and outstanding service to UNI. Jon Scoles, Alumni Achievement Award for his significant personal and professional success as a UNI graduate; Troy Dannen, Young Alumni Award for his professional success and active role at UNI early in his career. Scoles, a Charles City, Iowa, native, who now resides in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with wife, Laura (Ellis) Scoles (M.A. 2001), graduated from UNI in 1973 with a degree in mathematics with teaching certification. After three years of teaching, he entered law school at the University of Iowa, earning his juris doctorate in 1979. He clerked for the Iowa District Court Judges for one year before joining the Iowa Law firm (now DeVries, Price and Davenport) in Mason City, Iowa. Scoles was appointed District Court Judge for the Second Judicial District of Iowa in 1986 and served on that bench for 20 years including responsibilities as Assistant Chief Judge and Chief Judge, The UNI alumnus was appointed to his current position as Magistrate Judge of the United States Federal Court for the Northern District of Iowa in March 2007. Foster, a 1983 UNI graduate who resides in Clive, Iowa, with his wife Heidi (UNI class of 1978), is a partner in the Des Moines office of McGladrey & Pullen, LLP and managing director of RSM McGladrey, Inc. He earned McGladrey & Pullen’s “People Partner of the Year” award in 2002 that recognized his efforts in helping younger members of his firm to achieve personal and professional success. Foster is a certified public accountant in Iowa and Missouri, a member of Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants as well as the Institute of Management Accountants. He is a member of the Construction Financial Management Association, serving on the Iowa Chapter board of directors, the National Budget and Finance Committee and the National Accounting and Reporting Committee. He also is involved with the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute and the Greater Des Moines Chamber of Commerce. |

Foster has been active in the UNI Accounting Advisory Council and has volunteered countless hours to UNI and its students. He provided both vision and leadership in establishing the McGladrey & Pullen Center for Accounting Education at UNI, and was instrumental in endowing the McGladrey Professorship in Accounting. Dannen, a 1989 UNI graduate, is executive director of the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU), the only organization in the nation solely devoted to interscholastic competition for girls. Dannen began his career as director of publications for the IGHSAU in 1989. He was promoted to associate executive director in 1993 and named executive director in 2002. |

Dannen’s community and professional service includes the Iowa Games board of directors, Greater Des Moines Sports Commission board of directors, Drake Relays Committee board of directors, AAU Junior Olympics Local Organizing Committee and the Iowa Athletic Council. Dannen and his wife, Lori, have two daughters, Emily (12) and Holly (8). The family resides in Des Moines. Langerud to lead UNIAA Board
