The new Business and Community Services (BCS) Building creates an entrepreneurial and interactive environment for public/private partnerships, including state-of-the-art business incubation space and services for technology transfer and student businesses. Several UNI programs that serve businesses and communities will be located in the facility, creating a onestop technical assistance location for entrepreneurs, businesses and communities throughout Iowa. BCS programs housed in the new building will combine expertise and experience into an easily accessible location to meet the needs of Iowa’s entrepreneurs and economic developers.

Funded by appropriations from the U.S. Department of Energy and Small Business Administration and the Grow Iowa Values Fund, the Business and Community Services building houses UNI’s economic development and technology transfer programs, such as:

  • Innovation Incubator
  • Student Business Incubator (SBI)
  • Institute for Decision Making n Iowa Waste Reduction Center
  • Recycling and Reuse Technology Transfer Center (RRTTC)
  • Intellectual Property Officer
  • Office of Technology Transfer and Business Incubation

In the past year, BCS programs have assisted more than 2900 business and community clients, reaching all 99 counties. In addition, BCS provided opportunities for 1,450 students and 140 faculty members in economic development and technology transfer projects, many of which were conducted with other Regent universities, community colleges and state agencies. Experience has proven that students in BCS programs contribute to the state’s economy and stay in Iowa. The building will be dedicated August 24.

Human Performance Center construction in full swing

It may look a little rough now, but this room is being prepared to house the MRI machine in the the new Human Performance Center, scheduled to open in November 2007. The HPC will create many new opportunities for students in both UNI Athletics and Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services (HPELS). Cedar Valley Medical Specialists will have clinic space in the new facility, which also will be home to Sport and Human Performance Center and the Center for Healthy Youth Development.
