Track And Field:

The Panther men’s team came away from the 2006 Indoor Track and Field Championships with an 18th-place finish, crowned four all-Americans and broke two school records.

Head coach Chris Bucknam was named Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year and USA Track and Field Midwest Coach of Year after the Panthers posted their seventh consecutive indoor MVC title. Sophomore Raven Cepeda was named Most Outstanding Field Athlete at both the Indoor and Outdoor Valley Championships, while junior Cody Eichmeier was named Most Outstanding Male Track Athlete at the MVC indoor meet. Cepeda scored a personal-best 7,371 points in the decathlon at the outdoor conference meet, qualifying for nationals with the 11th-best performance in the nation.

On the women’s side, sophomore Rachel Jansen set school records in the shot put, hammer throw and discus, qualifying for Basketballboth the Indoor and Outdoor National Championships in the shot put.

Men’s Basketball:

UNI posted anothertrip to the NCAA tournament, finishing 23-10, 11-7 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The PanthersMen's Basketball graduated seniors Ben Jacobson, John Little and Erik Crawford. The threesome helped the team to three consecutive appearances in the Big Dance.

UNI broke into the top-25 rankings for the first time in history and tied a school record with 23 victories. Jacobson was named first team all-conference, along with junior forward Grant Stout. Stout led the conference in rebounds (8.9 pg) and recorded 13 double-doubles on the season.

Five-year assistant coach Ben Jacobson was named head men’s basketball coach March 22, replacing Greg McDermott,
who was named head coach at Iowa State University. Jacobson beCoach Ben Jacobsoncame the 21st head men’s basketball coach in UNI history dating back to 1900. Rich Glas, former 18-year head coach at the University of North Dakota, was named UNI’s associate head coach and Kyle Green returned as an assistant coach after two years as the head coach at Lewis University.

Women’s Basketball:

The Panthers (19-11, 12-6 in the MVC) finished third in the MVC standings, outdoing their preseason fifth-place pick. UNI now has finished in the top half of the Valley standings seven of the past eight seasons. It also competed in the postseason for the third time in the last six years, playing at Kansas in the preliminary round of the WNIT.

UNI graduated four players, including the team’s leading scorer for the past two seasons, center Cassie Hager. Hager was
named 2006 MVC Defensive Player of the Year and set the MVC record for blocks in a game (9), season (135) and career (337).

Wrestling:

Eight intercollegiate institutions, including UNI, announced the formation of the Western Wrestling Conference (WWC). The NCAA Division I wrestling-only alliance will begin competition in the 2006-07 season. Charter members of the Western Wrestling Conference will include: the United States Air Force Academy, Fresno State University, North Dakota State University, the University of Northern Colorado, the University of Northern Iowa, South Dakota State University, Utah Valley State College and the University of Wyoming.

Baseball:

UNI finished 28-27, 10-14 in the MVC and placed five Panthers on allconference. Freshman shortstop Brandon
Douglas became the first Panther freshman to earn first team all-conference honors since UNI’s move into Division I. UNI
remained undefeated, 3-0, in the annual Corridor Classic against the Iowa Hawkeyes and claimed series wins over Southern Illinois and Creighton.

Women’s Tennis:

Junior Meredith Esbeck was named all-MVC at the No. 6 singles position with a 20-6 overall singles record, including an 11-1 performance at No. 6. Sophomore Meghana Paritala was one of six players named to the MVC Singles All-Select team. She posted a 22-8 singles record this year (14-5 in dual meets), playing at the No. 1 position for the Panthers all season.
