Pardon the construction: progress under way

constructionIf you've been to campus within the last six months, you might have found it a bit difficult to navigate. Blocked streets, closed parking lots, and fenced off sidewalk: it's what we like to call progress.

We've temporarily lost about 200 parking spaces, but patience will pay off when a new parking deck and transit facility opens with 550 spaces on that same piece of land. The two-level parking deck and transit facility is expected to open fall 2009, and we all look forward to more parking and transportation options.

The most noticeable project isn't taking place directly on campus, but it will have a big impact on both the campus and the community. The multi-million dollar College Hill streetscape project is underway to repair infrastructure and improve the aesthetics of the College Hill neighborhood, including streets, sidewalks, benches, landscaping, public art and pedestrian amenities. College Street will reopen to traffic this winter, which will help ease navigation around campus.

In addition to College Hill's physical renovation, a new coalition has been created to maintain the street's spirit. The College Hill Partnership, a consortium of business owners, property owners, homeowners, the city of Cedar Falls and UNI will lead the College Hill area's revitalization and promotion. An event is planned for April to celebrate this revival. College Hill will be a part of UNI alumni memories for years to come.

We know that construction isn't always convenient, so we appreciate your patience. No matter how many detours you have to make to get here, you're always welcome at UNI.
