Iowa Math and Science Education Partnership

According to Department of Education reports, Iowa is fboysacing a shortage of math and science teachers. Iowa students, once global leaders in math and science test scores, have slid to average in comparison to their peers across the U.S. Looking to reverse this trend, the Iowa Legislature approved $4 million during its 2008 session to fund a Board of Regents, State of Iowa, collaborative initiative to strengthen mathematics and science education across the state. The Iowa Mathematics and Science Education Partnership (IMSEP), led by UNI in collaboration with Iowa State University and The University of Iowa, has three basic goals:
1. To improve mathematics and science performance of Iowa students;
duo2. To prepare more high-quality mathematics and science teachers for Iowa’s schools; and
3. To promote statewide collaboration and cooperation.
UNI associate professor of biology Jeff Weld is the director of IMSEP, which is housed at UNI’s Center for Energy and Environmental Education. This fall IMSEP awarded 16 grants totaling more than $1 million in projects to improve math and science education in Iowa. Those projects and other IMSEP activities will help Iowa return to its status as a leader in math and science education.
