A strong Alumni Association means a stronger UNI
Your UNI Alumni Association supports dozens of services, activities and programs. Reunions, socials, alumni recognition, student engagement, career advice networks, legislative advocacy, recruiting future Panthers and much more are financed by your membership. On top of that, there are great tangible benefits like discounts, UNI stuff and special events.

We’re working to strengthen UNI. And a stronger UNI instantly identifies you as a person with a great education from a great university.

Take a few minutes to think about the value of your UNI degree - and join a growing number of alumni who express their support by becoming a member of the UNI Alumni Association. If you’re not sure if you're a member, e-mail holly.johnson@uni.edu.

Visit www.unialum.org/membership and click on "Join Now" to begin the membership process. There has never been a better time to join – Purple for Life is more than a slogan. It's what we are.

UNI is second on U.S. News & World Report list

For the 12th consecutive year, UNI is ranked second in the "Best Midwest Universities -- Master's" category for public universities, according to U.S. News & World Report's 2009 "America's Best Colleges" guidebook. UNI also was in a four-way tie for 17th on a combined list of all public and private Midwest regional universities -- one of only three public institutions to make the list of top 20 Midwest regionals.

University of Northern Iowa plans fifth early childhood education summit
UNI will host an early childhood education summit, "Focus on Quality: Quality Math and Science Curriculum for Preschool Teachers," Sept. 12 -13, in Schindler Education Center (SEC). This is the fifth in a series of summits to focus on the quality of early childhood education programs in Iowa and specifically those in the Statewide Voluntary Preschool Program.

Friday's event will be from 7 to 9 p.m. in rooms 244 and 245 of the SEC. It is free and open to the public. Keynote speaker Karen Worth, senior research scientist at the Center for Science Education, Education Development Center, Inc. and co-author of the "Young Scientist Series” will present "Science and Young Children: A Natural Fit." A book signing and reception with light refreshments will follow.

UNI preserving Iowa's educational foundation
Early Iowa settlers planted the seeds of learning by building schools across the prairie and making education a priority for their children. The Iowa state quarter recognizes the past with the inscription, "Foundation in Education." Now the University of Northern Iowa is preserving that foundation, working to make it accessible so Iowa can build on its strong history as a leader in education. Since last summer, UNI Museums have become the home to thousands of documents and ledgers that are the official records of Iowa rural school history. And more is on its way.

'Excellence in Teacher Education’ e-zine

The UNI College of Education’s fourth issue of "Excellence in Teacher Education" e-zine is available. The magazine provides news about College of Education programs to current, past and prospective students and is a forum for teacher education professionals to share information with others. Visit http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/uni/coe-summer08/. To receive a print copy of the magazine, contact katrinka.smith@uni.edu.
