US News and World Report Rankings Announced For the 10th consecutive year, the University of Northern Iowa is ranked second in the "Midwestern Universities -- Master's" category for public universities, according to U.S. News & World Report's 2007 "America's Best Colleges" guidebook. UNI also ranked 18th on a combined list of public and private Midwest regional universities -- one of only three public institutions to make the list of top 20 Midwest regionals. Inspiration Awards Honor Grad Students From New Orleans The Graduate Student "Inspiration Awards," were presented at the New Graduate Student Orientation on Thursday, August 24. Established in the fall of 2006, it will be awarded on an occasional basis to a graduate student who has successfully overcome extraordinary challenges and/or hardships while pursuing graduate study at UNI. The inaugural award was presented to 22 students from our partner institutions in New Orleans, in honor of their "extraordinary courage, determination and tenacity" while their lives and those of their families "have been so severely traumatized and disrupted by the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, a catastrophic storm that devastated the Gulf Coast of the United States in August, 2005." Panther-Themed Water Tower Adorns Cedar Falls Skyline The 125-foot-tall water tower on Lloyd Lane near the intersection of Greenhill and Hudson roads now champions the University of Northern Iowa through an agreement between UNI and Cedar Falls Utilities. During the last week of August, contractors painted the tower's cap purple and the Panther athletics logo and the University of Northern Iowa nameplate were added on the 22-foot-8-inch tall flat section of the cylinder-shaped top. Missouri Valley Conference Commemorates 100 Years In 2007, the Missouri Valley Conference celebrates 100 years of collegiate sports excellence. Attend the Panther Picnic on October 6 The Alumni Association will host its first ever Panther Picnic on Friday, October 6. Join us on the front lawn of the Alumni House (across from University Book and Supply) from 6:30-8:00 p.m. for traditional picnic fare (bratwurst, marinated chicken breast, salads, baked beans, and the famous UNI cookies). Bring a chair or a blanket and then plan to head over to the pep rally and fireworks by the campanile. Cost is just $8 for adults and $5 for Association members and children 12 and under.
