Homecoming 2008 wrapup

University of Northern Iowa Together for Education!
UNITE is a volunteer grassroots organization made up of alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents of UNI students and friends of the university who are committed to higher education in Iowa and to the University of Northern Iowa. Our members participate in legislative forums, submit letters to the editor, meet with their local elected officials, and write or e-mail their elected officials to promote UNI.

With your help, UNI will maintain its role as a leading university in the nation. Our website will help you become well versed in the issues facing UNI today and how to effectively contact your elected officials. Members of UNITE will receive updates via email throughout the year updating them on issues and events as well as invitations to special events on campus and in the community.

A strong Alumni Association means a stronger UNI
Your UNI Alumni Association supports dozens of services, activities and programs. Reunions, socials, alumni recognition, student engagement, career advice networks, legislative advocacy, recruiting future Panthers and much more are financed by your membership. On top of that, there are great tangible benefits like discounts, UNI stuff and special events.

We’re working to strengthen UNI. And a stronger UNI instantly identifies you as a person with a great education from a great University.

Take a few minutes to think about the value of your UNI degree - and join a growing number of alumni who express their support by becoming a member of the UNI Alumni Association. If you’re not sure if you're a member- e-mail holly.johnson@uni.edu.

Visit www.unialum.org/membership and click on "Join Now" to begin the membership process. There has never been a better time to join – Purple for Life is more than a slogan. It's who we are.

College Hill Partnership – a community-University project
The College Hill Partnership (CHP), created in an April 2008 merger between the College Hill Business Association and the College Hill Neighborhood Association, has appointed its first coordinator. Adam Bentley, a graduate student in the public policy master's program at UNI, will handle the CHP’s day-to-day business, working as a liaison between College Hill residents, businesses, UNI and city officials.

The College Hill Partnership’s mission is to stimulate economic development in the College Hill neighborhood, and work with all local stakeholders to make the neighborhood an attractive, safe, innovative and desirable place to work, live and visit. The CHP also will be involved in College Hill events and developing a unique “brand” identity for the College Hill district.

Dave Mason: thank you for a job well done
The UNI Alumni Association board of directors has bestowed Honorary Alumnus status upon longtime friend Dave Mason for his continuing work with the alumni program. A partner with Redfern, Mason, Larsen & Moore, P.L.C. of Cedar Falls, David has long provided advice and leadership to the UNI alumni program.

A small world – full of purple!
Who would have guessed that two UNI grads would meet for the first time at #10 Downing Street in London? Judy Davison, M.A. ’90, Ed.D. ’97, and Mary Sue Ellinger, B.A. ’71, M.A. ’88, did just that when they represented the Fulbright Association in England on September 10. The pair were invited as part of the 60th anniversary celebration of the U.K.-U.S. Fulbright Commission. The two alumnae plan to stay in touch and are looking forward to a return trip someday.
