Rock the Dome!

It is Homecoming and that means it is time to pack the bags, hop in the car and make your way back to Cedar Falls. Homecoming ’06 offers all the traditional events of years past including the parade, Athletic Hall of Fame inductions, Panther Football complete with a pre-game tailgate featuring live music and games for the kids, the midnight fest at the campanile and more.

Looking for something to do on Friday night? Check out the Panther Picnic sponsored in part by University Book and Supply. Music, door prizes, great food and a chance to catch up with old friends and classmates are yours at this family event. It starts at 6:30pm on the Alumni House lawn. ($8 for adults, $5 for UNIAA dues-members and kids under 12). You can register for this event at www.unialum.org/events.shtml

Don’t forget the Panther Yell and fireworks that follow!

Purple 4 Life!

Your UNI Alumni Association (UNIAA) could not offer events, programs and services if not for its members. If you are not yet a dues-member of the UNIAA, think about becoming a part of something special. We are helping shape the future of our University. We are working hard to strengthen the value of your degree. We are striving to ensure that we spread the word about the Power of Purple.

There are dozens of tangible benefits to being a dues member. Just the discounts alone will save you more than the cost of the membership. But the real value is in joining with thousands of other Panthers in making a difference.

You’ll notice something different this year. There are three levels at which you can join. Each carries a base of benefits and each level has its own special benefits. Memberships start at $35 annually. There are $50 and $100 levels too. Every membership helps UNI and your Association.

If you would like more information about the dues program, visit www.unialum.org today!

Panther Union Launches!

With the increasing demand for more and better online communication tools the UNI Alumni Association is very excited about the launch of Panther Union which allows alumni to leverage their network of UNI connections to find jobs, housing, business associates and activity partners. It also allows an easy way for alumni to re-connect and stay-connected with people they have lost touch with over the years. Powered by Affinity Engines, Panther Union provides an exclusive, dynamic, secure, and user-friendly online community, driven by alumni users themselves.

Panther Union allows alumni to "build their network" by searching for and inviting fellow alumni to join. The network grows quickly by friends inviting friends to partake in the virtual community. Commonly known as peer-to-peer or social networking, this provides a visual mapping of who you know, and who they know. In other words, Panther Union illustrates the popular six degrees of separation concept within the UNI alumni community.

Customized groups allow alumni to discuss issues ranging from first time parenting to mountain biking to real estate investing. Forums offer a place to ask and offer advice, find a sublet, or post a job exclusively to fellow alums. Other features include messaging, blogging, and unlimited photo sharing and much more, all generated dynamically to create an experience unique to each individual alumnus.

Check it out at pantherunion.unialum.org Panther Union is provided free of charge to all UNI graduates as a service of your UNI Alumni Association.

New faces at your Alumni Office

The UNI Alumni Association is pleased to announce that Connie Hansen ’89 and Holly Johnson will team with Amy Mohr as the heart of the UNIAA alumni relations staff.

Connie ‘89 has worked on campus since graduation including stints in admissions and student activities. She has earned national and international distinction for her work with students including the Association of Student Advancement Programs (ASAP) Outstanding Advisor Awards at the district and international level. She has also presented at dozens of conferences and seminars about and involving young alumni.

Holly Johnson will join the staff in late October as program assistant for membership and special projects. She is currently director of Campus Life at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Michigan.

Holly also brings extensive experience in higher education to the UNIAA. Prior to her current role in student life, she worked 5 years as assistant director for alumni relations. Active in CASE and ASAP as a student and advisor, Holly earned ASAP Outstanding Student Leader recognition at both the district and international level, as well as ASAP District 5 Outstanding Advisor. Like Connie, Holly has presented at numerous conferences about alumni relations, integrating campus and alumni life.

The pair joins UNI alumna Amy Mohr ’99 to form the trio directly involved with delivering outstanding programs and services to the more than 93,000 UNI graduates. Amy has been with the UNIAA for six years. She will continue focus her energies on outreach and reunions.

Innovative Teaching and Technology Center (ITTC) Dedication

You’re invited to the rededication of the Gymnasium, now known as the ITTC, on Tuesday, Nov. 7. Please RSVP by October 31 at jane.larsen@uni.edu.

The gymnasium has been transformed into a state-of-the-art facility with an eye to serving the needs of our students, faculty and staff. Reminders of the history of the building were left intact including the bleacher seats for the pool. The whole project stands in witness of what can be accomplished in blending old and new.
