1. Homecoming Parade Web Cast

The annual Homecoming parade is Saturday, October 11th. If you can't make it back to Cedar Falls, be sure to log on to the Alumni Association’s Web site at 10am CST for a live Web cast. Cameras are positioned at the intersection of College and 23rd Streets, so you’ll have a great view of the floats, bands, and parade dignitaries. To view the parade, visit http://www.unialum.org.

2. Alumni & Friends Network

The Alumni & Friends Network is a volunteer program which enables alumni and friends to share their talents with current students and help shape the University's future. Volunteers can identify which areas are of interest to them and how the University could best utilize their talents. Opportunities include representing UNI at various public events, providing internship or job shadowing opportunities to current students, and/or serving as a regional contact for alumni relocating to a specific area. For more information on this program, or to become a volunteer, please visit http://www.unialum.org/network.html.

3. Upcoming Events

4. Heritage Honours Awards Accepting 2004 Nominations

Nomination forms for the 2004 Heritage Honours Awards are now available. The Alumni Achievement and Young Alumni Awards honor UNI graduates who have achieved significant professional accomplishments. The Alumni Service Award recognizes those alumni who have volunteered their time on behalf of the University. Awards are presented during the Spring Commencement ceremony in May. Detailed information and nomination materials are available at http://www.unialum.org/heritagehonours.html.

5. College of Education Names New Dean

Jeffrey W. Cornett has been named dean of the College of Education. Prior to this appointment, Cornett was professor and chair of the Department of Educational Research, Technology, and Leadership at the University of Central Florida. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University, a Master’s degree from the University of Toledo, and a Ph. D. from The Ohio State University. He replaces William Callahan who served as interim dean after Thomas Switzer resigned to accept a position at the University of Toledo.

6. UNI Reaches Enrollment Goal

UNI’s 2003 fall enrollment stands at 13,441 students, which is just over its goal of 13,400. By comparison, UNI reached a record enrollment of over 14,000 students in 2001. This decrease in enrollment is a planned effort to maintain quality education for UNI students while addressing recent state budget cuts. Although fewer students are enrolled, the University’s admissions standards have not changed. Instead, the University has managed enrollment through a variety of methods, including lowering the graduation credit requirement from 124 to 120 and implementing a stricter academic suspension policy.

7. Quad Cities - Celebrate the Purple in Your Life!

The University of Northern Iowa invites alumni and parents in the Quad Cities area to a free evening of fun, food, and entertainment. Celebrate the Purple in Your Life on November 6th from 6-8 p.m. at the Putnam Museum and IMAX Theatre. UNI student musicians and performers will be on hand to provide the evening’s entertainment. A short program will feature University President Robert Koob ’62, athletic coaches, and faculty. Food and cash bar provided. To register, please call the Alumni Association toll free at 888-864-2586 or register online at http://www.unialum.org/celebrate.html.

8. UNITE to Host Town Hall Meeting

UNITE, UNI Together for Education, will host a Town Hall Meeting in Sioux City on November 17th. Alumni and friends are invited to attend to learn how to become an advocate for public higher education in Iowa. President Robert Koob ’62, will present "Iowa's Students are Its Future: Why It's Everyone’s Business," a short program about how universities and colleges improve Iowa’s communities. The event will be held at Western Iowa Tech Community College at 6:30pm. For more information, or to RSVP, please call Stacey Christensen at 319-273-3170 or send an e-mail to stacey.christensen@uni.edu.

9. UNI Foundation to Host Annual Scholarship Luncheon

The UNI Foundation's annual Scholarship Appreciation Luncheon will take place on Thursday, October 9 in the Commons Ballroom. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to meet and thank their benefactors - those alumni and friends who have given generously to provide scholarships. Featured speaker is Dr. Joseph Walder of Integrated DNA Technologies. Dr. Walder established the Hubbard Award, which is given to a faculty member at each of the state's public universities. For more information on the Foundation’s scholarship fundraising efforts, please visit http://www.uni-foundation.org.
