Introducing President AllenOn April 28, the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, selected Benjamin J. Allen, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost of Iowa State University, as the ninth president of the University of Northern Iowa. "We had an outstanding group of highly qualified candidates and great input from UNI students, faculty, staff, the Campus Committee for the Presidential Search and the Presidential Search and Screen Committee," said Michael Gartner, President of the Board of Regents. "We firmly believe Ben Allen is the right person at the right time for UNI. He has the right combination of skills and background to lead UNI into the future." Gilchrist Hall Rehab Begins As you’ve probably heard by now, fire damaged Gilchrist Hall at UNI in October of 2005. Offices have been relocated, and the extensive repair work is set to begin. Repairs, beginning with removal of asbestos, will start this month with plans to reopen the building by summer of 2007. Gallagher Bluedorm Performing Arts Center Announces 06-07 Season The GBPAC’s Artist Series will kick off on September 21 with a performance by comedian George Carlin. The 06-07 season includes 22 different shows, concerts, and musicals. Tickets go on sale May 8 to Friends of the GBPAC, with sales to the general public beginning June 1. Lux Service Award Recognizes Students For Outstanding ServiceThe Lux Service Award is considered the highest undergraduate award for service at UNI. In April, the Alumni Association announced the 2006 Lux Service Award recipients and finalists. Recipients Thu Mai ’07, and Amanda Walston ’06, will receive their awards in a pre-game ceremony during Homecoming 2006. Finalists Tarek Fahmy ’06, Scott Powell ’06, and Tally Stowell ’07 will also be acknowledged for their service during the ceremony. James Rudd ’71 to Receive Heritage Honours Award The 2006 Alumni Achievement Award has been bestowed upon James Rudd ’71. Rudd resides in Portland, Oregon where he is CEO and Principal of Ferguson Wellman Capital Management, Inc. He is considered to be one of the top business and civic leaders in the state of Oregon. Rudd earned his BA in Physical Education and Health from UNI in 1971. After graduating, Rudd became UNI’s first Athletic Business Manager and further served UNI as a key player in the planning and fundraising of the UNI-Dome. Rudd continues to serve UNI today as a member of the Panther Scholarship Club and as a volunteer for the UNI Foundation. President Robert Koob will present the award during the 11 a.m. spring commencement ceremony on May 6. |

Cedar Falls Mall Site of UNI Alumni Art ExhibitCollege Square Mall is the presenting sponsor and host for an upcoming art exhibition featuring the work of recent UNI graduates. “Façade: recent Work by UNI Art Alumni” will open with a reception on Saturday, May 13, and will remain on exhibit until June 9. Participating artists include Jim Benedict ’00, Andrew Crooks ’05, Tom Mueske ‘05, Marcus Payzant ‘06, Angela Pease ‘03, Aypryl Pippert ‘05, Julie Rowan ‘05, and David Schmitz ’06. UNI Band to Offer Free Performance in AnkenyThe Symphonic Band is performing at 7:30 pm, Wednesday, May 10 at the Ankeny High School auditorium. The performance is open to the public and will include the selections that band will offer at the Hotel Fort Des Moines for the Iowa Bandmasters Association Convention the following evening.
