President and Mrs. Koob Offer Farewell and Thank You

May marked the official end of President Robert Koob’s tenure as UNI’s president. He and wife Yvonne attended several farewell events held in their honor and offered a thank you letter to their UNI family. www.uni.edu/pres/letter.shtml President and Mrs. Koob are looking forward to spending time in California with their children and grandchildren.

Dr. Benjamin Allen Becomes UNI's Ninth President

President Benjamin Allen assumes office on June 5. Dr. Allen joins UNI after serving at Iowa State in a variety of capacities for more than 25 years. He and his wife Pat were officially welcomed to campus following the announcement of Dr. Allen's appointment on April 28, 2006. For additional details visit http://www.uni.edu/presidentialsearch/

Regent Universities Propose Energy/Environment Surcharge

The $100-per-semester Energy/Environment surcharge for students announced this month will be voted on at a special Board of Regents, State of Iowa, meeting in Ames on June 20.  If approved, the surcharge will take effect this fall and will generate $1.9 million in funding for UNI. This will still leave UNI $2.1 million short in funding mandatory cost increases. See the university's perspective at www.uni.edu/govrel/legisupdate.html

Former President Koob Shares His Opinion on Budget Concerns

A guest opinion from President Koob about the State of Iowa’s budget decisions ran in the Des Moines Register on May 29. Click here to read his editorial.

Things to Do

Forensics Alumni Reunion Planned for Homecoming 2006

Alumni of the forensics program are invited to save the dates of October 6 - 8, 2006, for a reunion on campus at UNI. Events include a Friday evening reception, tour of the new forensic squad room, a “tailgate and debate” event on Saturday, and a banquet with special guests. For more information or to volunteer to assist with the planning please contact Jake Thompson at 319-273-7200 or jacob.thompson@uni.edu. Complete details, including lodging information, and schedule updates, will be posted online at www.uni.edu/forensic.

Rock the Dome During Homecoming 2006

Hey, mark your calendars and plan to rock out Panther style on October 2-7. The student homecoming committee has selected “Rock the Dome” as the 2006 Homecoming theme. Plans are underway for several student and alumni events. New this year, our events on campus will include more family-friendly activities to better meet your needs. Help Us Name Our Newest Service!

Have you heard of Facebook or MySpace yet? How about InCircle? These are just a few of the social networking services offered via the World Wide Web. It’s a fairly new craze that is sweeping through the e-world and allowing users to connect with friends, classmates, and peers based on shared interests or affiliations. Soon, UNI alumni will have their very own social networking service via InCircle. Alumni can access this resource free via our Web site. There’s just one problem. We need a catchy name. Panther Nation is taken. MyUNIverse is already spoken for. So what can we call it? If you’ve got an idea, send it to info@unialum.org. Please include your name and graduation year as well. If we decide to use your suggestion, you’ll win a Panther prize pack! (Contest ends June 15, 2006.)

Volunteers Needed for Parent Hospitality Tent

A special Parent Hospitality tent will be offered at summer new-student orientation on campus at UNI. The tent will be a place where parents will have a chance to talk with veteran UNI parents, take a break from the busy orientation schedule, and even write a note to their child for delivery during the first week of classes. If you are the parent of a current or former UNI student, consider volunteering a shift at the booth. Volunteers are needed on Monday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m., June 5 – July 7. For more information, contact james.oconnor@uni.edu.

Are You On the RAGBRAI Route?

We’re looking for alumni and friends living on or very close to this year’s RAGBRAI route. If that’s you, we’d like to borrow your front lawn to host a hospitality tent for Panthers participating in the ride. A copy of this year's route is available online at /www.ragbrai.org/routemap2006complete.pdf. If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact amy.mohr@uni.edu.
