1. Maucker Union Renovation Project Begins

Following several years of planning and design, construction for the renovation and expansion of J.W. Maucker Union got underway in early May. The $13 million project, funded exclusively by student fees, includes a new facility for the Center for Multicultural Education and office space for International Services, Student Activities, student organizations and Northern Iowa Student Government. In addition, the project will provide for new food service space, administrative offices, renovation of the Coffee House and Hemisphere Lounge, newly expanded retail space, and a series of new and refurbished meeting rooms. Entrances will also be upgraded for accessibility to all patrons. Plans call for all phases of the project to be concluded by summer of 2004. The Union will remain open for most of that period, with various areas temporarily closed as construction requires. For more information, please contact Dr. Jan Hanish, at 319-273-2257 or visit http://www.uni.edu/maucker.

2. Panther Athletics Unveils a New Intercollegiate Logo

UNI Athletics unveiled a new logo at a press conference held on May 30, 2002. The new logo, which incorporates a more stylized, ferocious panther head, was a collaborative effort between UNI's Office of University Marketing and Public Relations and CI Apparel of Fargo, ND. This is the first new mascot logo in 15 years, and it will begin appearing on clothing and accessories by the end of June. To view the new logo, please visit http://www.unipanthers.com.

5. Volunteers Needed for UNI Booth at the Iowa State Fair

Each year UNI exhibits at the Iowa State Fair, and this year will be no exception. The State Fair runs August 8-18, 2002, and for the second straight year, UNI's booth will be located in the Varied Industries building. Yes, it's air-conditioned! Alumni volunteers are needed to help staff the booth throughout the 11-day event. Shifts are three hours long and run from 9am-noon, noon-3pm, 3-6pm, and 6-9pm. New this year: University Book and Supply will be selling Panther merchandise at the booth! If you would like more information or would like to volunteer, send an email to Stacey.Christensen@uni.edu. (Please indicate your desired dates and times.) This is a great opportunity to show your Panther Pride!

6. Students First Campaign Update

Plans are progressing for UNI's new Human Performance Center and McLeodUSA Center. The Iowa Board of Regents approved hiring Herbert Lewis Kruse Blunck Architects from Des Moines, in collaboration with Crawford Architects of Kansas City to design the new facilities. The architects will begin meeting immediately to determine the arena location and building designs. Both centers will be located within the University's west campus complex of educational, wellness, recreation and sports facilities. UNI Foundation development officers will begin working in the Cedar Rapids area this summer to solicit gifts for the Students First Campaign. An Advisory Committee is being developed to work with alumni and friends in the Cedar Rapids area.
