| UNI offices to move back home! Gilchrist Hall reopens in July Offices and departments displaced by the October 2005 fire in Gilchrist Hall will begin moving into the newly renovated building during the week of July 7. Check out the schedule at http://www.uni.edu/pubrel/gilchrist.shtml. Russell Hall Rededication and celebration Sept. 26 and 27 marks a significant weekend at UNI. You’re invited to the School of Music "Breaking Ground," a celebration and rededication of the renovated Russell Hall. The weekend activities include the Russell Hall rededication, the 27th Annual Scholarship Benefit Concert, an alumni banquet dinner and a faculty, alumni, guest and friends concert. Check out UNI on youtube! http://www.youtube.com/user/theunipanthers Campus goes smokeless July 1 State legislation banning smoking on state grounds goes into effect Tuesday, July 1. UNI is developing policies and procedures to comply with the law. As of July 1, smoking is prohibited on the UNI campus including parking lots and outdoor facilities such as sports fields. See the Iowa Department of Public Health home page for specifics. Disaster Scholarship Fund The UNI Foundation has established a scholarship fund for UNI students impacted by natural disasters. To contribute, contact the UNI Foundation at 273-6078 or visit uni.foundation@uni.edu. Regents Math and Science Initiative renamed The $4 million Board of Regents Mathematics and Science Education Collaborative Initiative has been officially named the Iowa Mathematics & Science Education Partnership(IMSEP). Applications for Teaching in Iowa Incentive Award now available December 2007 and May 2008 teaching graduates are encouraged to apply for the 2008 Teaching in Iowa Incentive Award. To be eligible, graduates must have financed their education at least in part by student loans and have accepted their first teaching position in the State of Iowa by Sept. 2. Jean Shimpach Griffin ’86, who works at United Space Alliance, was recently recognized as a Space Flight Awareness (SFA) honoree for her work in support of NASA's Space Shuttle and International Space Station programs at Kennedy Space Center. Griffin serves as a senior technical writer and was recognized for her exemplary work in preparing, editing, and publishing the Ground Launch Sequencer Description Document. This document, which is required for each mission, is used at virtually every location across the country that provides support for the Space Shuttle Program. Griffin is also responsible for the documentation of numerous other application software systems used during the countdown and launch of the Space Shuttle. The SFA Program is a NASA safety and awareness managed motivational program geared at ensuring that every employee involved in human space flight is aware of the importance of their role in promoting astronaut safety and mission success in the critical, challenging task of flying humans in the hostile environment of space. UNI Literacy Education Virtual Community The UNI Literacy Education division has launched an online virtual community for current and alumni literacy education minors and graduate students, as well as literacy education faculty. The site provides a forum for the exchange of ideas about the teaching of literacy, for discussion of issues, and the sharing of methods and resources. If you are interested in joining and have yet to receive an e-invitation, please e-mail susan.jordan@uni.edu. Please include your first, last, and maiden name (if you have married since graduating). Also, include your graduation year and current e-mail. Disaster Diploma Replacement Program The UNI Registrar's Office and the UNI Alumni Association have teamed up to offer free replacement diplomas to alumni who lost theirs in a natural disaster. Alumni interested in obtaining a replacement diploma can make a request by stopping by the Alumni House on West 23rd Street, e-mailing mark.jastorff@uni.edu or calling 319-273-2171. | UNI Awarded National Duals Through 2011 The 2008 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals were named Event of the Year by the Cedar Valley Tourism Awards in 2008. NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: UNI Adds Eight More All-America Honors UNI men's track team finished the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships with a school-best 22 points for an 11th place team finish. Clark Named First Team Academic All-American Mat Clark has been named to the ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-America Men's Track and Field/Cross Country team.
