UNI Update
Salute to our troops
When Lucille Lettow’s son, Navy LTJG Karl Lettow let it be known that Iowa and Iowa State banners were hanging in an area of chow hall of the U.S. Embassy in Iraq, she touched base with the UNI Alumni Office. In a matter of days, a UNI banner was on its way. And in a matter of days, the UNI Alumni Office was in receipt of a U.S. Flag that had flown over the Embassy in Baghdad and a couple of photos of Karl and the UNI banner. Lucille is the youth collection librarian at UNI’s Rod Library.
Karl Lettow grew up in Cedar Falls, Iowa and graduated from Northern University High School in 1991. He attended Dana College, Blair, NE for two years, and received his B.A. (political science, Min. philosophy) from UNI in 1996. After graduation he enlisted in the Navy and attended the Defense Information School on Fort George G. Meade, Md.
In his first assignment, he served as a journalist in USS Bataan (1997-2001) and made the ship's maiden voyage to the Mediterranean and Middle East. In 2001 he returned to the Defense Information School for instructor duty. He earned a M.A. in Communication from the University of Oklahoma ('03) and was selected for commission, attending Navy Officer Candidate School, Pensacola, Fla. (2003). Upon graduation from the Public Affairs Officer Course at Fort Meade (2003), he was appointed deputy public affairs officer on the personal staff of the Chief of Naval Operations in the Pentagon, Washington, D.C.
Prior to his deployment to Iraq, he was a public affairs officer on the Navy News Desk in the Office of the Navy Chief of Information (Pentagon, 2006), a position he will return to in the fall.
He currently serves as a public affairs officer with the Multinational Forces - Iraq in Baghdad.
Karl's wife Heather, and children Logan, 4, and Chloe, 2, await his return to their home in Bowie, MD.
