Around Campus
The Gift of Gab
The holidays are here. You'rr find yourself gathered around a table with extended family and attending office parties, which might lead to encounters with people you don't know well or don't know at all. Paul J. Siddens III, UNI associate professor of communication studies, has some advice on how to ease the stress that can come with carrying on conversations, especially when you find yourself sitting with someone new.

Heritage Honours nominations sought

Know of a UNI graduate who is deserving of the UNI Alumni Association’s highest recognition?  Heritage Honours nominations are being accepted for the Alumni Achievement Award, Alumni Service Award and Young Alumni Award.

The awards are presented annually during the annual Homecoming celebration on Oct. 10-11.

Emerging Leaders
Young alumni are invited to become an inaugural member of the Campanile Society’s Emerging Leaders. If you graduated in the last decade, you can invest $100 for each year after graduation, and become an Emerging Leader in the Campanile Society. For example, if you graduated in 2006, your contribution would be $100. If you graduated in 1997, your contribution would be $1,000.

“UNI was very generous to me as a student, both in terms of the educational and financial support I received. It is difficult to articulate how grateful I am for my experience at UNI. I hope that by continuing to donate to the university I can help provide a quality education to its students. I’m celebrating my successes by joining the UNI Campanile Society as an Emerging Leader.”  Kaitlin Stimpson ’06

Alumni Spotlight
UNI alumni receive Grammy nominations for jazz album
Warren Hatfield ‘52 and James Linahon ’73 have received Grammy Award nominations. Hatfield received six nominations in four categories for his album "SMILE." Linahon is nominated for his engineering work in two award categories.

“Smile” is an homage to jazz legend Paul Desmond and was recorded at Linahon's LMP Studios in Claremont, Calif. The CD features Hatfield on saxophone and oboe with a jazz rhythm section and strings. The album includes UNI alumni Linahon, Jeff Tower '75 and Jim Coffin ’52 performing along with many of the top studio musicians in Los Angeles. Linahon was the head recording engineer and mixer for the album.

Hatfield lives in Phoenix, and performs with his jazz quintet, his nonet déjà vu and with various groups. Hatfield taught at South Dakota State University for 33 years, including 27 years as head of the music department. He recently recorded on an album for the Italian jazz trumpet artist Andrea Tofanelli.

Tower is an award-winning director of bands at Hemet High School (California). Coffin directed the UNI Jazz Band program from 1964-1972 and lives in Garden Grove, Calif.; and Linahon lives in Claremont, Calif.
