1. Former Astronaut Sally Ride to Speak at UNISally Ride, the first American woman in space, will speak on campus at 7:30pm on Thursday, March 25, as part of the Joy Cole Corning Distinguished Leadership Lecture Series. Established in 2001 by UNI alumna and former Iowa Lt. Gov. Joy Cole Corning, the series' purpose is to bring to campus nationally and internationally renowned leaders. Ride’s first two spaceflights were aboard Challenger in 1983 and 1984. She was appointed to serve on the presidential commission investigating the 1986 Challenger accident, and was then assigned to NASA headquarters in Washington DC. She is now a physicist and a member of the faculty at the University of California, San Diego. There is no cost to attend the lecture, but tickets are required and can be obtained by calling 319-273-SHOW.
2. Association Scholarship and Lux Service Award Forms Now AvailableApplications for the Alumni Association’s student scholarships are now available. 4. Arts in April FestivalThe Fourth Annual Arts in April festival will be held on Saturday, April 3rd. Arts in April is a month-long series of artistic events, performances, and activities held on the UNI campus. The festival will be held in the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center and will feature a variety of performances and workshops for all ages. A full schedule of festival activities will be available in mid-February at http://www.uni.edu/pubrel/artsinapril. 5. Students First Campaign Reaches $94 million MarkThe UNI Foundation has announced that $94 million of the $100 million goal for the Students First campaign has been raised. The initial fundraising goal of $18 million for the McLeod Center has been reached, however the UNI Foundation continues to raise funds for important components that will enhance the Center's versatility for the campus and community. These include a kitchen, concert light and sound systems, and retractable seating. In addition, funds are being solicited for an above-ground connection to the UNI-Dome and a finished hospitality suite. Construction is scheduled to begin Summer 2004. 6. Athletic Club Golf Outings – Coming to a Town Near You!The Athletic Club’s 2004 UNI Golf Tour schedule is now available. The Tour consists of 16 golf events, including a new event in Webster City, Iowa. The Annual Homecoming Golf Spectacular will be held in Cedar Falls on Friday, October 8th. 7. Merchant Scholarship Applications Available to AlumniUNI alumni are invited to apply for a 2004 Merchant Scholarship. The Merchant Scholarships are awarded to UNI alumni who are attending, or plan to attend, a graduate or professional school program at any educational institution in the US or abroad. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of ability, achievement, character, potential, and service to society. 8. UNI New Iowans Program to Host Three Community EventsThe UNI New Iowans Program will present a program in three Iowa cities entitled, “New Americans and New Iowans: A Key to Iowa's Future.” The program reviews work and life issues faced by immigrants and refugees in the United States. Panel members include UNI President Robert Koob ’62 and program director and co-director Mark Grey and Anne Woodrick. Clips from the upcoming PBS miniseries The New Americans will also be featured. This miniseries tells the stories of five immigrants and refugees from very different parts of the world. The events will be held on March 9th in Des Moines, March 11th in Cedar Falls, and March 23rd in Mason City. The events are free and open to the public. 9. UNI Annual Fund Introduces Campanile SocietyThe UNI Foundation recently introduced the Campanile Society, a new gift recognition level for supporters of the UNI Annual Fund. To date, over 60 alumni have joined this group with a gift of $1,000 or more. These unrestricted gifts support all students and departments by enhancing programs, supporting scholarships and improving facilities.
