UNI News - December 2001

Panther Athletics Riding High on Recent Victories

UNI athletes have had great success in their sports this season and have made the Panthers champions once again. The men's cross country team blew away the competition at the 2001 MVC Championships and placed first with 38 points. The women's volleyball team finished their regular season 29-1 and captured their fourth consecutive MVC Tournament title. They hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA Volleyball Championships in Cedar Falls for the first time since 1995. With their wins over Northern Illinois and Minnesota, UNI will take on Long Beach State in the Sweet 16 on Thursday, December 6th at Long Beach State. UNI football recaptured the Gateway Conference Championship for the first time since 1996 with their victory over Western Kentucky on November 10th. This win provided an automatic bid to the playoffs where UNI beat Eastern Illinois 49-43 in the first round. UNI hosts the second round at home on December 8th against Maine. Head coach Mark Farley '87 was recently named Gateway Conference Coach of the Year, which is a first for a Gateway rookie coach.
