University of Michigan president establishes scholarship at UNI A $100,000 gift from Mary Sue Coleman, president of the University of Michigan, and her husband Kenneth Coleman, has established the Leland Wilson Chemistry Lectureship at UNI. The gift will fund an annual lecture in chemistry and honor Wilson, who is Mary Sue Coleman's father. Wilson became the first head of the Department of Chemistry at UNI in 1968, and served in that capacity until 1975. He retired as a professor of chemistry in 1979, and died in 1993 at the age of 79. "My father had genuine affection and admiration for his students and he was an extraordinarily gifted teacher," Mary Sue Coleman says. "He was very proud that UNI chemistry graduates were, and are, highly competitive for graduate school and professional school placements. This is not just any Department of Chemistry; it is a very special one." Read more at http://www.umpr.uni.edu/news.asp?NewsID=3051. BCS dedication The new Business and Community Services building will be dedicated on August 25 at 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend. U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley will be part of the program. Tours and refreshments available following the program. The building is one block south of University Avenue, on Jennings Drive. This new building creates an entrepreneurial and interactive environment for public/private partnerships. Funded by appropriations from the U.S. Department of Energy and Small Business Administration, the Grow Iowa Values Fund and private sector gifts, the BCS building is home to UNI’s economic development and technology transfer programs. University of Northern Iowa presidential candidate forums UNI with support from U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley and U.S. Senators Charles Grassley and Tom Harkin, is planning to host a series of presidential candidate forums: "Back to School: Addressing the Challenges and Opportunities in American Education." The forums will be held August 20 through September 5 on UNI's campus. The focus of the forums will primarily be on policy initiatives related to education and its broader implications for global competitiveness. UNI will organize these forums with state and national constituency organizations and media. Education has long been a prized value of Iowans. UNI, with its 131-year history of outstanding teacher education programs, will give Iowans an opportunity to hear from presidential candidates their visions and views for education. What’s up at UNI? We’re told that it is pretty rare that spouses compete in separate events at the Senior Olympic Games. Rarer still is when both win a medal in their respective sport. That’s what UNI alumni Jane McClelland Gabe ‘64 and Larry Gabe ’65 did at the 2007 Games held in Louisville in late June and early July. Jane won the bronze medal in women's singles tennis by defeating the number one seed 6-2, 6-1. She lost in the semis to the eventual gold medal winner. Larry played with the South Carolina Hilton Head Sun City All Stars. He went 16 for 27 at the plate including a home run, 3 triples, 2 doubles and 10 singles in 8 games. The Senior Olympic Games featured more than 12,000 athletes competing in a full array of sports. Note the UNI shorts that Larry is wearing. He wore them for all eight games, nothing superstitious about that!! |
