Former University President J. W. Maucker Dies

J.W. Maucker, who served as university president from 1950-1970, died on July 5th at the age of 92. When he became the fifth president of UNI, then Iowa State Teachers College, at the age of 38, he was one of the youngest college presidents in the Midwest. During his tenure, enrollment grew from 2,688 to 9,496, curricular offerings were extensively revamped, and the college was changed from an emphasis strictly on teacher education to the provision of degrees in the liberal and vocational arts. Following a position at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas, he and his wife Doreen retired in Cedar Falls. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helga.

 
Homecoming - Wild with Pride!

"Wild with Pride!" has been selected as the 2005 Homecoming theme. Mark your calendars for October 10-15, and plan to return to campus to celebrate all that's great about UNI! Several events are planned specifically for alumni, including the annual Alumni Homecoming Golf Spectacular, All Alumni Reception and All Alumni Tailgate. Visit

October 14th is Purple Pride Day

Alumni, friends and parents are encouraged to wear UNI apparel on Friday, Oct. 14th, to kick-off UNI Homecoming Weekend. Fans can show off their UNI purple by taking group photos showcasing their UNI Panther pride. Photos can be sent to University Marketing & Public Relations, 126 East Bartlett Hall, Cedar Falls, Iowa 50614-0392, or via e-mail to umpr@uni.edu. Please include a short caption with the photo that explains who is in the picture and when it was taken. Photos will be displayed online at www.uni.edu.

 
Renovation Begins on New Alumni House

The UNI Alumni Association will soon be moving to a new location on campus. The house located at 1012 W. 23rd Street (across the street from University Book & Supply) is being renovated, with a scheduled completion date of October 1st. Alumni and friend are invited to visit the new Alumni House during the 2005 homecoming festivities.

 

Employers Invited to Participate in Annual Career Fair

The 25th Annual UNI Career Fair will be held in the UNI-Dome from 2-6pm on September 19th. The fair is an excellent opportunity for employers to meet face to face with UNI students and alumni seeking internships or full time employment. New York Times Columnist Thomas Friedman to Speak at UNI

Thomas Friedman, foreign affairs columnist and three-time Pulitzer Prize winner for The New York Times, will speak on September 14th at 7:30 p.m. at the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. The lecture is part of the Joy Cole Corning Distinguished Leadership Lecture Series. Friedman served as both the Beirut and Jerusalem bureau chief, the chief diplomatic correspondent, chief White House correspondent, and international economic correspondent prior to assuming his current position. Friedman's presentation is based on his latest book, "The World is Flat: A Brief History of the 21st Century." Tickets are free and open to the public. They will be available August 22 and can be reserved by calling 319-273-SHOW.

 

Curriculum Available for 'Lifelong University'

UNI's new Lifelong University is designed for those interested in learning for enjoyment. Course formats vary and include workshops, lunch-n-learns, and three or four-week educational sessions. Panther Fan Fest

The UNI Athletic Club invites Panther fans to attend the Panther Fan Fest to kick-off the 2005 athletic season on Friday, August 12th at 5:30 p.m. The event will be held in the parking lot SW of the UNI-Dome and features free food and beverages (while supplies last), autographs with coaches and athletes, and inflatable games for kids.
