1. Alumni Association Sponsors Reunions for Class of 1942 and 1952

The UNI Alumni Association welcomes back 1952 and 1942 graduates for their 50 and 60 year class reunions. The 50 Year Reunion for the Class of 1952 will be held May 9-11, 2002. Class members are invited back to campus to enjoy three days of events including campus tours and a banquet. Attendees are also invited to participate in the spring commencement ceremony, which will honor the 50th anniversary of their graduation from what was then known as Iowa State Teachers College. The 60 Year Reunion will take place on June 7, 2002, and will honor the Class of 1942. Class members are invited back to campus to visit with old friends and see how much the University has changed over the years. The UNI Foundation is working with both classes to establish a Class Gift, which will be presented to President Koob during the reunions. For more information about these events, please contact the Alumni Association toll free at 888-864-2586 or send an email to amy.mohr@uni.edu.

5. Students First Campaign Update

UNI is proceeding with planning the McLeodUSA Center and Human Performance Center. An architect will be hired this Spring 2002 and preliminary plans for the facilities and final cost estimates will be completed in September 2002. A total of $25 million is being raised for construction of both facilities. McLeodUSA Center will be home to men's and women's basketball and women's volleyball. The Human Performance Center will house a Sports Medicine Center, Camp Adventure™Youth Services, Global Health Corps, Youth Agency Administration, National Program for Playground Safety, Youth Fitness and Obesity Institute and intercollegiate athletics classrooms, coaches' offices, and training facilities. Both centers will be located within the University's west campus complex of educational, wellness, recreation and sports facilities. 6. Legislative Update

The General Assembly is currently working on the FY 2003 budget. The Governor's revised budget proposal shows no further reductions to the Regents universities. However, the Education Appropriation Committees have submitted a budget proposal that would reduce UNI's operating budget by 3 percent, approximately $2.5 million. It is also very likely that the salary bill will be significantly under funded this year. The salary bill is of critical importance to UNI due to the fact that it funds the salary increases for state employees. Most of UNI's employees are under collective bargaining agreements and therefore UNI is obligated to fund these agreements. If the salary bill is under funded, UNI must make up the difference with additional cuts on campus. This means that UNI's budget reductions could be significantly larger than $2.5 million. The Regents universities have lost $82 million this current fiscal year. This amount is nearly equal to UNI's total state appropriation, which currently stands at $85 million. In effect, the state of Iowa has lost the equivalent of UNI in one fiscal year. To find out how you can get involved, please contact UNITE (UNI Together in Education) by sending an email to Stacey.Christensen@uni.edu or visit http://www.uni.edu/govrel/unite.

7. Spring Commencement to be held in the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center

Traditionally held in the UNI-Dome, spring commencement ceremonies for the University of Northern Iowa will take place in the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center over two days. The ceremony for the Graduate College will be held Friday, May 10th at 7pm while all remaining colleges will host separate ceremonies on Saturday, May 11th. Due to limited seating, each graduate will receive 4-5 tickets each, depending on their college, and the ceremonies will be broadcast on local access cable television in the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area.

8. Arts in April

Arts in April is a compilation of events that highlight the many arts and cultural pursuits of UNI which the community is invited to enjoy throughout the month of April. In addition to the performing arts, UNI will host exhibits, lectures, films, family-centered events, observatory programs and special dining opportunities. This year's events will kickoff with an arts festival in the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on April 1st. You don't want to miss this wonderful opportunity to sample the very best that UNI has to offer in arts and culture! For more information, please call 319-273-2761.

9. Distance Learning Grows with UNI Online Workshops

The demand for online educational opportunities continues to grow. The Department of Teaching's Online Professional Development workshops extend learning opportunities for K-12 educators and cooperating teachers who supervise UNI student teachers. The Web-based workshops cover a wide range of topics, including "Violence in Schools: What Teachers, Administrators and Counselors Can Do." Registrations for June and July workshops are now being accepted. For more information or to register for a workshop, please visit

10. UNI Dome Closes for Repairs

The UNI Dome is scheduled for internal structural repairs, which will close the Dome March 18 thru August 16. This is phase II of a process that began last year. While no events will be held in the Dome this spring and summer, campus offices and staff members housed in the UNI Dome will be able to remain and continue normal operations. It is expected that the UNI Dome will be open for the first home football game on August 29th when UNI takes on Wayne State. For more information, contact James O'Connor at 319-273-2761.
