UNI Names Two Alumni as New Men's Basketball and Football CoachesThe University of Northern Iowa announced the hiring of Greg McDermott '88 as the new Men's Head Basketball Coach and Mark Farley '87 as the new Head Football Coach. McDermott recently served as Head Coach at North Dakota State University and Farley served as Assistant Coach at the University of Kansas. Their appointments begin immediately. Go Panthers!
UNI Celebrates its 125th Anniversary!The University of Northern Iowa will celebrate its 125th anniversary this year with a series of special events and performances. On March 19, the Iowa House and Senate, along with Gov. Tom Vilsack, issued a proclamation which saluted the university's many contributions to the state. "Our goal is to use the anniversary to strengthen and build relationships on and off campus," said Cheryl Gaston, assistant vice president for marketing and public relations at UNI. "We'll do that by showcasing how UNI puts students first, how UNI is committed to great learning through great teaching, and by proving that UNI is here to serve Iowa."
New UNI Nameplate DesignIn conjunction with its 125th anniversary, the University of Northern Iowa is unveiling a new nameplate. The new design, approved by the university Cabinet in February, will serve as the visual cornerstone of the university's marketing efforts. Joy Corning '54 Donates $1 Million to UNIA desire to give students the opportunity to hear and interact with leaders in their respective fields from all over the world prompted University of Northern Iowa alumna and former Iowa Lt. Gov. Joy Corning, to make a $1 million gift to the UNI Foundation's "Students First" campaign. The Joy Cole Corning Distinguished Leadership Lecture Series will bring to campus national and internationally renowned leaders in such areas as the arts, business, education, government, and the judiciary. She believes it is important for students to understand what makes a leader and how people become leaders. Madeleine Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State, will be the inaugural speaker on October 24, 2001.

UNI Center for Multicultural Education Celebrates 30th AnniversaryThe Ethnic Minorities Cultural & Educational Center was established in February 1971. Its mission is to provide both educational and cultural activities that promote cross-cultural awareness and multicultural understanding through participation in its programs by all segments of the University of Northern Iowa and Cedar Falls/Waterloo communities. After more than 25 years, the Center changed its name to The Center for Multicultural Education (CME). To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the center hosted a three-day celebration in March. For just $15.00, plus $4.95 shipping, you can purchase your own UNI-Dome! Each limited-edition replica is numbered and the underside features a 1-1/2" x 3" insert of the original Teflon coated fiberglass roof in service on the Dome from 1976-1998. Actual dimensions of the replica are 6" x 6-5/8" x 2".
