Hydrology, or the field of water sciences, is an integral part of UNI's Department of Earth Science curriculum. Room renovations; modern, specialized laboratory equipment; and new computers will give UNI physical- and life-science students hands-on experience and a more in-depth look at the complexities of the relationship between earth and water thanks to the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust. The new lab also will support outreach activities, including workshops for Iowa teachers, and strengthen research ties between UNI and other institutions and organizations in the area of water quality, according to Iqbal, who also is the director of this project. | ’65 UNI alum tabbed UConn President Michael J. Hogan has been appointed the 14th president of the University of Connecticut. He joins UConn from the University of Iowa, where he has been executive vice president and provost since 2004. A specialist in the history of American diplomacy, Hogan holds the F. Wendell Miller Professorship in History and has been the chief academic officer at the University of Iowa. He was responsible for oversight of all academic programs, including the medical school; student academic services; academic strategic planning; and the promotion of student and faculty diversity. Hallett earns National Public Radio Leadership Award Adrienne Hallett ‘97 was recently presented with one of two 2007 Public Radio Leadership Awards from the NPR Board of Directors and the 800-plus NPR Member stations around the country. Adrienne is an advisor to Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) on public broadcasting issues and professional staff member for the Senate Appropriations Committee. The award was presented on April 25 at a ceremony at the Rayburn House Office Building. The resolution noted her work on behalf of public radio, serving with “distinction, uncommon accomplishment and consistent excellence throughout her years as a senior congressional staff professional and providing indispensable leadership, counsel and energy to fund the needs of public radio stations.” Jere – who lives in Burnsville, Minnesota - recently sent this photo of a UNI flag and this note: “…I displayed at the October Tailgate Couples outing here at Crystal Lake Golf Club in Lakeville. GO UNI!!” 76 couples play in the nine-hole outing and then enjoy a dinner on the deck of the club house. Hall of Fame donations The new UNI Athletics Hall of Fame opens this fall. It will be located within the connector between the UNI-Dome and McLeod Center. The grand opening ceremony is set for Homecoming, Oct. 13. While we have many outstanding historical items to represent the wide and varied history of Panther sports, we know that many of you have items as well. Whether it is a jersey, a helmet, a game program, a photograph, or something else entirely – we’re looking for items for possible inclusion. Presentation space is limited, so we might not be able to include everything we get, all of the time. However, if you have something that you think might fit in this new and exciting area, please let us know. You may make a gift of the memorabilia or simply make a loan to UNI. UNI Alumni Association to honor three The University of Northern Iowa Alumni Association will honor three distinguished graduates as part of the Homecoming 2007 celebration. The Heritage Honours Awards are presented annually in three categories: Alumni Achievement, Alumni Service and Young Alumni. The awards will be presented during a reception as part of Homecoming 2007 on Friday, Oct. 12, at the Gallagher Bluedorn. The reception is free to the public and will begin at 5:30 p.m. The awards program will commence at 6p.m. Alumni Achievement Award: Judge Jon Scoles, Class of 1973, was appointed Federal Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of Iowa in the spring of 2007. Prior to that appointment, he served on the Iowa District Court Bench for the Second Judicial District of Iowa for more than 20 years. The award recognizes significant personal and professional success of UNI graduates. Alumni Service Award: Rodney Foster, Class of 1983, is a partner in the Des Moines office of McGladrey & Pullen, LLP and managing direct of RSM McGladrey, Inc. Rod has been active with the UNI Accounting Advisory Council and played an active role in establishing the McGladrey & Pullen Center for Accounting Education at UNI. The award recognizes personal and professional success, as well as a significant involvement with UNI. Young Alumni Award: Troy Dannen, Class of 1989, is Executive Director of the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union, the only organization in the nation solely devoted to interscholastic competition for girls. The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union promotes, directs, protects and regulates amateur interscholastic athletic relationship for junior high and secondary girls between member schools to stimulate fair play, friendly rivalry and good sportsmanship among contestants, schools and communities throughout the state of Iowa. More than 70,000 students participate in IGHSAU sponsored sports. The award is presented annually to a graduate who has enjoyed professional success and has been active in the life of the University.
