Dr. Maucker was under considerable pressure from students during the Vietnam war. He had sit-ins on his front porch as well as his office. He handled it all with much calm. He called me to see if students could use our teletype machine to send a message to the President. We agreed and sent a message with over 1000 signatures from the University Book Store. Dr. Maucker was very gracious during a very trying time of his career. I think all students were supportive of his helping them.

As a member of student government in the late 60's I had the opportunity to work with President Maucker on several occasions. My memories of the man are of someone who was kind, patient and intelligent all guided by a gentle soul. My memories of the President are of someone who was a courageous leader who always considered and valued the input of others no matter who they were. He was a president who held steadfast to the tenets and ideals of higher education and academic freedom. He stood for what was right when others pushed to settle for something less. This was a man of rare integrity and compassion who was a giant among his peers. All who knew him were made better from the kindness and wisdom he shared so willingly and so generously.
